Course Description
This one-hour machine guarding course for general industry is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the hazards associated with machinery in the workplace and the importance of effective machine guarding to prevent injuries. Participants will learn how to identify specific hazards associated with machinery, understand the principles of effective machine guarding, and be familiar with OSHA’s machine guarding standards and requirements. The course will cover how to inspect and maintain machine guards, identify deficiencies, and develop a machine guard maintenance and inspection program. In addition, participants will be trained on safe work practices and procedures when working with machines and machine guards and understand the importance of providing training to workers on machine guarding. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify, evaluate, and address machine guarding hazards in their workplace, ultimately helping to protect the safety and health of workers.
Course Objectives
At the end of the course participants should be able to:
- Identify specific hazards associated with machines in the workplace: Participants will learn to identify the different types of hazards associated with machines in the workplace, including pinch points, rotating parts, flying debris, and other hazards.
- Understand the principles of effective machine guarding: Participants will learn the fundamental principles of effective machine guarding, including the different types of guards, the importance of selecting the appropriate guard for a specific machine, and how to properly install and maintain guards.
- Familiarize with OSHA’s machine guarding standards and requirements: Participants will become familiar with OSHA’s machine guarding standards and requirements, including the general requirements for all machines, as well as specific requirements for certain types of machines.
- Learn how to inspect and maintain machine guards: Participants will learn how to inspect and maintain machine guards to ensure they are effective, including identifying and addressing deficiencies in guards.
- Understand safe work practices and procedures when working with machines and machine guards: Participants will learn safe work practices and procedures for working with machines and machine guards, including how to properly position themselves when using machinery, how to use machine controls, and how to shut down the machine in an emergency.
- Develop a machine guard maintenance and inspection program: Participants will learn how to develop a machine guard maintenance and inspection program, including how to establish a schedule for regular inspections, how to document inspections, and how to address deficiencies in machine guards.
