Measures to Secure the Workplace

1. General Site Security:
   • Ensure the entire worksite is enclosed with adequate fencing.
   • Depending on location and risk factors like crime rate and potential property loss, consider installing a security system or hiring external security personnel.
   • Keep valuable items out of sight-from public view to avoid attracting attention. Pay close attention to scrap metal piles, as they can often tempt thieves to enter the site.
2. Building Security:
   • Always lock doors to buildings, and ensure valuables are hidden from view.
   • If someone peeks through a window and sees nothing of value, it may discourage them from entering.
   • Use security systems such as alarms, floodlights, and cameras where possible. Though the initial investment may be high, a good security system can help prevent costly break-ins.
3. Protecting Heavy Equipment:
   • There have been numerous incidents where people break into construction sites and use equipment recklessly, potentially damaging the site and endangering those involved.
   • To prevent this, keep equipment out of public view and lock it in a secure area, such as a shop or a fenced-in zone.
   • Always remove the keys from the equipment and lock the doors. Don’t rely solely on fencing to keep intruders out.
   • Use equipment’s master switches to further safeguard. Shut off the master switch at the end of each shift to ensure that those unfamiliar with the equipment cannot operate it.
4. Excavation Safety:
   • All excavations should be completely barricaded or fenced off at the end of the workday to prevent unauthorized access or accidents.
   • Don’t rely solely on perimeter fencing to safeguard exposed holes within the site. Proper barriers must be put in place to protect the public and employees from falling in or driving into the excavation.
