Introduction
Respiratory protection is a critical component of workplace safety, ensuring that workers are safeguarded from airborne contaminants such as dust, fumes, gases, and biological hazards. OSHA’s Respiratory Protection Standard (29 CFR 1910.134) establishes the requirements for employers to protect workers from harmful airborne exposures through proper respirator selection, fit testing, medical evaluations, and training.
This online safety course provides a comprehensive overview of the standard, including when respirators are required, how to choose the right type, and the responsibilities of both employers and employees in maintaining a safe working environment. Participants will learn about the different types of respirators, how to use them correctly, and the importance of an effective respiratory protection program.
By the end of this course, you will have a clear understanding of OSHA’s requirements for respiratory protection and how to implement best practices to ensure compliance and worker safety.

Course Description
Respiratory hazards pose serious health risks in many workplaces, from construction sites to manufacturing plants and healthcare facilities. OSHA estimates that 5 million workers in 1.3 million workplaces across the U.S. are required to wear respirators to protect against hazardous airborne contaminants such as dust, fumes, vapors, and infectious agents. Without proper respiratory protection, workers face increased risks of lung disease, cancer, and other respiratory illnesses.
This course provides a comprehensive overview of OSHA’s Respiratory Protection Standard (29 CFR 1910.134), equipping participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to implement and maintain an effective respiratory protection program. According to OSHA, respirators protect workers from exposure to hazardous substances that contribute to thousands of illnesses and hundreds of deaths each year. Studies show that proper respiratory protection can reduce the risk of occupational diseases by up to 90% when used correctly.
At the end of this online safety course, participants will understand OSHA’s requirements, learn how to properly select and use respirators, and be better equipped to maintain a safe and compliant workplace. This training is essential for safety managers, supervisors, and any employees required to wear respiratory protection on the job.

Course Objectives
At the end of this online safety training, participants should be able to:
- Identify Respiratory Hazards: Recognize various airborne contaminants—such as dust, fumes, gases, and biological agents—that require respiratory protection in the workplace.
- Understand OSHA Standards: Explain the key requirements of OSHA’s Respiratory Protection Standard (29 CFR 1910.134) and the importance of compliance to ensure worker safety.
- Select Appropriate Respirators: Choose the correct type of respirator based on specific workplace hazards, exposure levels, and the limitations of each respirator type.
- Perform Fit Testing: Conduct and interpret qualitative and quantitative fit tests to ensure proper respirator fit and maximum protection for workers.
- Demonstrate Proper Use and Maintenance: Apply correct procedures for donning, doffing, cleaning, maintaining, and storing respirators to extend their lifespan and effectiveness.
- Conduct Medical Evaluations: Understand the necessity of medical evaluations for employees required to use respirators and the role these evaluations play in a respiratory protection program.
- Develop and Implement a Respiratory Protection Program: Create a written respiratory protection program that includes training, program evaluation, and recordkeeping to meet OSHA requirements and enhance workplace safety.
